Keeping them engaged until the real hunt begins. There is also pointers and a guiding commentary as you hunt from professional hunters within the community. Which although sometimes intrusive and preachy, does help new players get the job done without altering any targets to their whereabouts. This game series has often been praised for its replayability and its cooperative aspects. So it will come as a surprise to long time fans that neither of these is present in this outing.
The game has a short run of missions that once completed are unable to be replayed. The game points you toward a free hunt mode instead but the objective heavy and structured levels clearly offer the better experience. Then to rub salt in that wound, you have to do this alone. There is no ability to hunt as a group with friends. This is a solitary experience and with the long and arduous periods of stealth and skulking around, this can become a mundane and rather lonely experience.
The game doesn't bring the series into the next generation with a shiny new coat of paint. It offers a better art style for sure, though this leads to lower frame rates and performance issues.
Plus a lot of the textures present are still not brilliantly imagined and are generally inconsistent throughout. The sound quality does an awful lot to help patch over this issue. With sounds and ambient noises of the wild that really do give an authentic feel of nature.
Cabela's is rich in content and its developers seem to have properly researched hunting methods and species. Unfortunately, the gameplay isn't always as realistic and tends to lose its way in a very arcade-y direction. Sounds are indicated by a circle superimposed on the screen, while animal tracks are highlighted so that you won's miss them.
Basically, everything is done to simplify the task for beginners. Although commendable as a tactic, this bias doesn't offer you the opportunities to change the setup: even in the most difficult mode, the game is too easy, especially when compared to genuine simulations like The Hunter.
Despite some very good points, like the movements and habits of animals and the ballistics, some details of the game are too disjointed to give a sense of realism, giving the impression that you're in a rustic version of Call of Duty rather than a true hunting simulation.
The sniper rifle that you're given at the beginning of the game, predators that roam nonchalantly alongside herbivores, and the ability to reload your gun in a split second while receiving advice via walkie-talkie are all a bit too unrealistic.
The bias of the developers isn't a failure in itself, but don't expect a highly realistic game. Also, be aware that the game menus, designed for consoles, are catastrophic on PC and will leave you wanting to hunt down the developers, as well as the animals.
This edition of Cabela's Big Game Hunter Pro Hunts is only average for a game of this genre, and especially for a product from a publisher like Activision. The scenery, vegetation, and animal animations are years behind the competition.
The publisher has, however, included some special effects meant to make up for it, although it's clear that not everyone will be a fan. For each bullet you fire, there's a Hollywood-like slow-motion effect that tracks the path of your bullet.
With a transparent view through the body of the animal, you'll get a very clear view of the affected organs at the end of each hunt. While this feature is pretty interesting, it may not exactly be in good taste. There are trails to follow and areas of trees where you can search on a regular basis.
Hints are given in the game, but it's best to explore the territory on your own. Some animals call certain areas home, so you have to walk through to find out which ones are prominent before going off and shooting at just anything that moves. There is a career mode that allows you to get new weapons and explore new areas.
This is a bit challenging as there are various tasks to complete that are hard at times, such as bagging the largest animal in the shortest time. Improved team-based gameplay with new characters, bigger maps, custom skins, better weapons and user modifications. Crime pays more with every challenging heist scenario plus new customizable weapons and character masks.
